Retaining wall cost in Canada
Alberta prices two structural retaining wall systems on its highway tenders: mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls and gabion systems. Both are engineered structures, not landscaping, and their prices reflect that.
STA 0+120Retaining wall types priced very differently
"Retaining wall" covers systems built on completely different structural principles:
- Mechanically stabilized earth (MSE) walls. Reinforced fill held together with geogrid or metal strips behind a facing panel — the standard method for tall, engineered highway and grade-separation walls.
- Gabion walls. Wire baskets or mattresses filled with rock. Gabion baskets build a thicker, taller gravity wall; gabion mattress is a thinner, flatter form more often used for slope facing and erosion protection than as a tall retaining structure.
- Segmental and cast-in-place concrete walls. Interlocking concrete block systems or poured concrete walls, common in residential and commercial landscaping — priced through the concrete cost guide rather than this page, since Alberta's highway tenders do not carry a separate segmental-block retaining wall item.
- Timber walls. Common on smaller residential jobs; no official Canadian price was found for timber retaining wall construction.
Retaining walls above a modest height are structural elements, not landscaping — the full engineering and grading context is in the grading, lot grading and retaining walls discipline page.
STA 0+2402026 prices
Alberta's 2026 provincial tender averages for the two structural systems it prices:
| Item | Unit | 2026 avg | Contracts | 2025 | 2024 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Mechancially Stabilized Earth (MSE) WallItem X370 | m² | $2,923 | 3 | — | — |
| Gabion Baskets - Supply and InstallItem E325 | m³ | $1,165 | 1 | — | — |
| Gabion Mattress - Supply and InstallItem E331 | m² | $583.11 | 2 | — | — |
Note the units differ by system: the MSE wall price is per square metre of wall face (height times length), while gabion baskets are priced per cubic metre of rock-filled volume and gabion mattress per square metre of installed area. Converting between them needs the wall's actual cross-section, since a taller gabion wall uses proportionally more volume per metre of face than a shorter one — there is no single conversion factor between the two unit types.
STA 0+360Engineering and permits
Most Canadian municipalities require a building permit, and often a stamped engineering design, once a retaining wall passes a certain height — commonly in the range of 1 to 1.2 m in many jurisdictions, though the exact threshold, and whether it is measured from the wall's face or from the exposed height on the low side, varies by municipality. No single official Canada-wide threshold was found for this guide; confirm the current rule directly with your municipality's building or development department before assuming a wall is small enough to skip engineering. A wall retaining a driveway, a building foundation or any surcharge load behind it (parked vehicles, another structure, a slope above it) is far more likely to require engineering regardless of height, because the load behind the wall, not just its height, is what an engineer is actually checking.
STA 0+480Why cost grows faster than height
Retaining wall cost does not scale in a straight line with height. A taller wall retains a larger wedge of soil behind it, which means more reinforced backfill, a wider reinforcement zone extending back from the face, and often a larger, deeper foundation or embedment to resist overturning and sliding forces that grow disproportionately as height increases. Doubling a wall's height can considerably more than double its cost once the extra reinforced volume, excavation and engineering are accounted for. This is also why a stepped series of shorter walls, called terracing, is sometimes a lower-cost way to manage a steep grade change than one tall wall, where site space allows it — a design decision for an engineer or landscape architect, not something to assume applies to every site.
STA 0+600What changes the number on a smaller wall
A short garden or landscape wall is not priced on the same basis as the highway-scale systems above:
- Drainage. Every retaining wall needs drainage behind it — weeping tile, granular backfill or a drainage board — to relieve water pressure that would otherwise push the wall over. Skipping it is the single most common cause of retaining wall failure, and it is not optional on a wall of any real height.
- Reinforcement and backfill. An MSE wall's cost is mostly in the reinforced backfill and geogrid, not just the facing panel; a taller wall needs proportionally more reinforced zone behind it, which also needs excavation room.
- Setback and excavation. Building a wall against an existing slope or structure with limited room to excavate and work adds cost that a wall built on an open site does not carry, since the reinforced zone behind an MSE wall needs physical room to be built that a tight urban lot may not have.
- Mobilization. A short residential wall pays for the same equipment mobilization as a much longer one, spread over less wall face.
STA 0+720What to send for a price
For a comparable retaining wall quote: the wall's height and length, what it is retaining (a slope, a driveway, a foundation) and what load sits behind or above it, soil conditions if known, access for equipment, and whether an engineered design already exists or still needs to be produced. The slope and grade converter helps translate a site's existing slope into the numbers an engineer or contractor will ask for.
Get the engineering settled before pricing the wall itself wherever a permit is likely to be required — a contractor cannot give a firm price against a wall type, reinforcement zone and foundation depth that has not been designed yet, and pricing against an assumed design that later changes under engineering review is a common source of cost surprises on retaining wall projects.
Questions people ask
How much does a retaining wall cost in Canada?
Alberta's 2026 tender averages price an MSE wall at $2,923 per m²1 per square metre of face and gabion baskets at $1,165 per m³1 per cubic metre — both engineered, highway-scale systems. A smaller residential wall, especially a segmental block or timber wall, is priced through the concrete cost guide or a direct landscaping quote rather than these figures.
What is the retaining wall cost per linear foot or per metre?
Structural retaining walls are priced per square metre of face (height times length), not per linear foot alone, because the height changes the volume of material and reinforcement needed. Convert the per-square-metre MSE and gabion prices above by the wall's actual height for a face-area estimate.
How much does a retaining wall cost in Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto or Ontario?
No city-specific retaining wall price is published anywhere in Canada. The Alberta figures above are provincial highway-tender averages, not municipal or residential rates; get a local quote and confirm your municipality's permit and engineering requirements before pricing the work.
How much does it cost to replace a retaining wall?
Replacement typically adds demolition and disposal of the failed wall to the cost of a new one — see the demolition cost guide for removal proxies. A failed wall often failed from a drainage problem, which should be corrected in the rebuild rather than repeated.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Calgary?
Likely, above a certain height or where the wall retains a driveway, foundation or other load — confirm the current threshold directly with the City of Calgary's building department, since no single official height threshold was verified for this guide.
Is there a retaining wall cost calculator?
Not one that accounts for engineering, drainage and reinforcement requirements, which vary too much by site to reduce to a simple calculator. The slope and grade converter helps describe the site to a contractor or engineer, which is the more reliable path to a real price.
