"How much does concrete cost" needs a category before it has an answer:

• Flatwork. Curb, gutter, sidewalk and pads — priced per linear or square metre, reinforced lightly if at all.
• Structural concrete. Bridge decks, piers, barriers and other load-bearing elements — priced per cubic metre, heavily reinforced, and specified to a higher strength and durability class than flatwork ever needs.
• Concrete pavement. A full-depth concrete road or lot surface instead of asphalt — rare in Canadian highway work and priced per square metre where it appears.

Structural bridge concrete costs several times more per cubic metre than a driveway pour, not because concrete itself is expensive but because of the reinforcing steel, formwork and quality control a structural element requires. Alberta's 2026 highway tender averages, by category:

Curb and gutter alone averaged $183.00 per m¹; adding a monolithic sidewalk to the same pour brings the combined item to $416.14 per m¹. Regionally, curb and gutter price varies with contract size and region:

Structural concrete is priced in a different bracket entirely: Class C averaged $3,316 per m³¹ and the higher-durability Class HPC (high-performance concrete, used on decks and elements exposed to deicing salt and freeze-thaw) averaged $4,133 per m³¹. Reinforcing steel, priced separately, added $2.94/kg to supply and $2.54/kg to place on the same 2026 tenders — a meaningful share of the total cost of any structural pour once a typical reinforcing ratio is applied.

Calgary publishes fixed rates it charges permit holders to restore concrete surfaces after a utility cut, which double as a real-world municipal benchmark for small concrete work:

² These are restoration rates the City charges to repair its own infrastructure after a cut, not open-market contractor pricing, but they are a genuine, current, Alberta-specific concrete cost per unit — and notably higher per metre than the highway curb-and-gutter average above, which is exactly the small-job premium described in the next section.

Winnipeg's local improvement schedule prices full concrete street reconstruction and sidewalk work per frontage foot: a 25-foot, 6-inch concrete street pavement at $615/ft frontage, rising to $855/ft for an 8-inch pavement including boulevards, and a 5-foot by 4-inch concrete sidewalk at $70 to $135/ft³.

British Columbia's 2013 cost guide priced a 1.5 m concrete sidewalk at $67/m² and a 1.8 m sidewalk at $77/m², and curb and gutter at $112/m (slip-form only) to $248/m (including asphalt removal), all in 2013 dollars⁴. Escalated using B.C.'s own highway construction cost index (105.011 for 2025/26 ÷ 75.156 for 2013/14 ≈ 1.40×), that is an index-escalated estimate — not a price — of roughly $94 to $108/m² for sidewalk and $157 to $347/m for curb and gutter in current dollars.

STA 0+600Concrete pavement: rare, and priced accordingly

A full-depth concrete road surface, rather than asphalt over a granular base, is uncommon on Canadian provincial highways. Alberta's 2026 tenders show Portland cement concrete pavement at $445.18/m² on the single contract that used it (item Q999) — a figure worth knowing exists, but not a stable average given the sample of one. Concrete pavement is more common in bus lanes, intersections carrying heavy turning loads, and some industrial yards, where its higher upfront cost is traded for a longer service life and lower long-term maintenance than asphalt. STA 0+720Why a driveway or patio pour costs more per unit

None of the figures above are a driveway or patio price, and a small residential pour costs more per square or cubic metre than any highway or municipal-restoration rate for reasons specific to concrete work:

• Minimum truck loads. Ready-mix suppliers set a minimum order volume per truck; a small pour can pay for concrete it does not fully use.
• Forming and finishing labour. A highway curb machine extrudes curb continuously; a residential pour is hand-formed and hand-finished, which is slower per square metre.
• Cold-weather protection. Once the forecast air temperature can fall below 5°C within 24 hours of placing, CSA A23.1 cold-weather concreting rules apply⁵, requiring the concrete to be placed and cured within minimum temperature limits — extra cost for heating, insulating blankets or enclosures on anything poured outside the warmest months.
• Access. A pump truck, extra labour or hand-carrying concrete around a tight urban lot all add cost a highway-scale pour never faces.
• Control joints and finish. A broom, stamped or exposed-aggregate finish, and properly spaced control joints to manage cracking, are labour items on top of the base concrete price.

For a comparable concrete quote: the area or volume (length, width and thickness), the finish required, whether the pour is flatwork, structural or pavement, site access for a truck or pump, and the season the work will happen in. Ask whether reinforcing steel or mesh is included, what strength (MPa) is specified, and how cold-weather protection is priced if the pour falls outside the warm months.
