Tonnes = area × thickness (m) × compacted density × (1 + waste). Trucks = tonnes ÷ payload, rounded up. Budget = tonnes × mix price; it excludes milling, tack, traffic control and mobilization.

Default density 2.35 t/m³ is derived from a state transportation agency’s yield conversion (60 kg/m² per 25 mm compacted)2; your mix design and compaction set the real value. The default mix price is the 2026 Alberta provincial average for EPS mix type M1, $88.90 per t1, a highway-scale average of the three lowest bids.
Questions people ask
How do you calculate asphalt tonnage?
Multiply the area (m²) by the compacted thickness (m) and the compacted density (t/m³). At 2.35 t/m³, 1,000 m² at 50 mm is about 117.5 t before waste.
How much does a tonne of asphalt cost?
On Alberta provincial highway contracts in 2025–26, EPS mix type M1 averaged $88.90 per t1. Small private jobs pay more per tonne because of mobilization and minimum charges; see the asphalt paving cost guide.
How thick should asphalt be?
Thickness is a design decision based on traffic, subgrade and frost. Parking areas and roads use different structures; follow the owner’s specification or a pavement design.
