Prince Edward Island’s occupational health and safety rules set when an excavation must be sloped, shored or boxed, and when an engineer must design the protection.

• Walls must be supported by adequate shoring and bracing or caging except when less than 1,219 mm (4 ft) deep, in solid rock, sloped to within 1,219 mm of the bottom at not more than 1 ft rise per 1 ft run, or not entered (s. 12.2(1)); shoring and bracing must be certified adequate by a professional engineer (s. 12.2(3))¹
• Locate underground utility lines before beginning (s. 12.1(1)); precautions when within 609 mm (2 ft) of utilities (s. 12.1(2)); spoil at least 609 mm from the edge (s. 12.5)¹
